Arlington Municipal Airport, Washington State On August 16th, 2022, I had the opportunity to sound Taps on my U.S.Q.M.C. WWII bugle in memory of SSgt. Herbert W. Harms and all his brother airmen who were lost during WWII. Next to me was Herb’s uniform he wore while he served with the 390th Bomb Group, 569th Bomb Squadron. On August 16th, 1944, SSgt. Harms was killed in action when his B-17F “Dottie III / Green Banana” was shot down over Zeitz, Germany. Herb was buried as an unknown soldier until he was identified in August 2018 and he finally returned home to be laid to rest with his family in November 2018. I sounded Taps while standing next to the tail gun position of the CAF Airbase Arizona‘s B-17G “Sentimental Journey” while they were visiting during their Flying Legends of Victory Tour. To be sounding Taps on that day, next to his uniform, next to a B-17, next to his battle station was an emotional experience.
